Have you ever felt like the ground should just open up
and swallow you up? Have you ever been in that dark place where you feel
useless and are probably a mistake of creation? I know I have, I like to call
that feeling a monster because no word is bitter enough to describe it. It is
my opinion that we all face this monster at some point in our lives. When we
were babies, this monster was like us, so tiny that we never really noticed it.
Then we came into a world that constantly feeds it. Parents compared us to the
cutest baby in the nursery; teachers always said we are not smart enough. The media is always telling us we are not
pretty enough. As we might expect, the monster
too keeps growing and before we know it, it is already sucking us.
After encountering this monster for quite some time, I have
a theory about it. It is always present, always sucking energy. But we are
always preoccupied that we don’t notice it, whatever it is sucking, we can
easily refill it with projects, families and friends. Put these out of the
equation and we have a monster-alone. Slowly it feeds your head with, ‘you are
not good enough’, ‘nobody needs you’, ‘just give up, you do know that you are
up to no good, right?’, ‘you are too grumpy to fit in’. And that is what I call
sucking. That phase is really scary, if you actually listen to it, you will
obviously end up to no good.
I know sometimes it gets too loud that we can’t really
ignore it, it’s understandable but what is not acceptable is giving in. Agreeing
with it and sulking all day doesn’t help anyone, not the monster and definitely
not you. There is one simple statement I
have been using and it has worked like how incense chases demons – I’m alive.
It’s that simple. If you have been studying patterns of the universe, you will
have noticed that everything has a purpose. There is a reason we have to see
the sun day in day out, there is a reason why have shooting stars, there is a
reason why you are still alive. Whether it is because you’ll be the next Mark
Zucherberg or you will save a dying soul, I don’t know. But I’m sure there is a
solid reason you are still breathing. That’s just how the universe works.
Sometimes it is more about what you do to the universe than what it does to
you. When we were babies, we were so busy playing that we never noticed the
monster. It’s high time we started playing again and this time you should mean
it.
Someone once said ‘So keep your head high, keep your chin
up and most importantly keep smiling because life is beautiful.’ That person
was Marilyn Monroe. I could get it at first, why would anyone with practically
everything in the world face this monster? It’s simple, the monster is
universal, doesn’t really care how pretty or famous you are, it is just
constantly there. Point is if you don’t squash it with anecdotes like life is
beautiful, it might just end sucking all that is left. So the next time you
encounter this monster, smile (even through the tears) and calmly say Life is
amazing! And it will be.
